What are you currently reading?
I skipped last week’s post, and I almost skipped this week’s too. It is much delayed since I’ve been working on my End of Year Survey and Challenges of 2018 posts.
I’m currently reading Saturday at Sweeney’s. I just started it yesterday morning while The Man took Cera to the vet. Baby and I stayed in bed all cuddled up and I read the first five chapters. It is getting good! This is a review book for Kimba’s tour company, and I thought it would be a great book to start the year off with and mark off my list. I was shocked to realize it’s the final book in the series and the first one I’ve read!
When the seafood business Lovie Sweeney established sixty years ago is destroyed by fire, she finds herself at the center of an arson investigation. What really happened that night? Is Lovie responsible for starting the fire or is her family under attack from a sworn enemy?
The loss of their family business leaves the Sweeney clan in flux. Samantha faces the challenges of rebuilding the market while her son, Jamie, on track to graduate from college in six months, must decide whether to make his permanent home in Prospect or move to Charleston where a new special someone resides. At age forty-five, Faith, who has never fully recovered from an abusive marriage, is on a quest to find her true passion? Jackie is distraught when her son, Sean, flunks out of college and struggles to find direction in his life without his twin brother to guide him. A medical diagnosis brings the sisters closer together and threatens to change family dynamics forever.
The Sweeney women remind us that it’s never too late to begin a new endeavor and to never stop chasing your dreams until you draw your last breath.
What did you just finish reading?
I started my holiday break with The Duke and Miss Christmas. It was a novella and the shortest book of the year for me. It was a very fast read, funny and fun. Gwen Prim ends up attacking Crispin, a duke, with her basket of mistletoe in the woods and things go on from there.
I did finish reading Christmas at Seashell Cottage like I had wanted to, but then I moved on from holiday books. I fell in love with the town of Jewell Cove and I was falling in love with the story and the characters until some very childish, manufactured drama turned up. It was seriously like watching a high school couple fight about being together and then break up and then fight about not being together and get back together and then fight about not being together and break up again. I feel like something got lost a little somewhere in there and wished it had only happened once. It dampened my enjoyment of the book overall.
My last book of 2017 was To the Duke, With Love. This is the second in the Rakes of St. James series. I did read the first book and loved it. I was expecting so much from this next book. It fell flat for me. I didn’t buy that the primary couple actually fell in love. It was very much an “I want you” situation with a great imbalance of financials. I did enjoy the encounters with the street urchin, Farley. He’s quick witted!
What do you think you’ll read next?
Next I’m going to read One True Pairing followed by Game of Hearts, both by Cathy Yardley. They are the second and third books in her Fandom Hearts series. Then it will be A Wedding at Two Love Lane by Kieran Kramer. It is the second in her Two Love Lane series and I’m hoping I like it more than I did the first book.
How about you? What are you reading this week?
