Outrageous Things I’ve Done for the Love of Books

Um. Well. I’ve never done anything really outrageous. Or that many things, really.

I did go along with my librarian friend a couple years ago to Book People when Ernest Cline was there for the release of Armada. It was so packed and I had to stand over an hour with my heavy ass purse. There wasn’t even enough room for me to turn around or shift. That’s how packed it was. I was so miserable and in pain I just wanted to leave. I wasn’t even into Ernest Cline or Ready Player One.

When I first started teaching, when the first book fair came to our school, I spent over $500 on books for my classroom. Books that have since been destroyed or stolen. I don’t buy anything for my class anymore.

One of my best teacher friends I met when I started teaching – who lives around the corner from me now…I can see her house through the backyards of my neighbors – wanted to borrow one of the books in the Outlander series from me. It was one I hadn’t gotten to yet; I was still on the book before that one. After my horrible experience with my annotated copy of Hunger Games being “given away” by a so-called friend, I had decided not to lend books to anyone. That was a trustworthy person, and my entire set of notes for my final were GONE. I was steadfast in my decision to not let her borrow my book. Except there was another person present when she did the asking and she made me out to be an asshole about not lending her my book.

What are some out there things you’ve done for a book?

Music on My Mind

The last year I have reconnected with music. It’s ironic since the two-ish years before I complained about and was unsatisfied with music a lot of the time. Here are some jams I’ve been tuning into…

Books On My Spring TBR

I stopped reading last summer before school started back for me. I was so stressed out with new curriculum, hosting UIL, and a whole new crew of yearbook staff that I finally reached max capacity and shut down. These are the books that were on my list at the end of July, so here is where I’m going to start, with a few new ones added in.

Which books are on your list?

Back to School Freebie – SCHOOL ESSENTIALS

I think most of you know I’m a teacher – a middle school teacher – and I’m also the yearbook advisor and UIL Coordinator. I have suddenly come to a realization that if you get googly-eyed and wiggy about office supplies, you probably should be a teacher. There is nothing like accidentally stealing someone’s Flair pen or using too many of their Post Its to have an unsaid death ray stare war going on. So, with all that, I’m going to share all my favorite school essentials!

Everything starts with a good composition book. Every year I start a fresh one with my class, and last year and this year I have bought my partner and I matching composition books. Last year was camo, this year is sparkles! Previously I used a huge 5 section notebook for all of my teacher business, but that is coming to an end. It’s been five years. Time to start over, and I’m going to do it with a composition book! I also have a separate comp book for going to my reading/writing trainings to keep all of that together in one place.

Flair Pens are every teacher’s favorite thing. If they tell you otherwise, they are lying. Unless it’s Post Its. I didn’t use Flair Pens really until this past year and I did so sparingly. But this year, kids buckle up! We gonna Flair it up!!

Post Its are the most beloved paper product in all schools. Teachers hoard them. We cry when they are gone. We use them like they fall from trees at trainings…as long as they are provided by the venue. I love using Post Its. I use them in my composition book to cover things up and then I can flip them up (like question on top, answer underneath), cover pictures in texts, write quick notes to myself, jot down Johnny’s mama’s number and name so I can call her at 4:00, give to a kid for their own reminder, use as an emergency hall pass, not to mention when I give them to my students to write something on for an assignment and stick it to the board or the door on their way out. And yes, colors matter.

Yes, that is duct tape. No, I don’t use it to tape across the mouths of smart alecks. For every unit we have, I make my students create a duct tape tab in their composition books. We can easily flip back and forth to get to things quickly, if they need to look for something from a previous unit I can tell them to look at their sunflower tab, and it helps them take a little ownership of their own notes. They put the tabs how they want on the new unit page. They can go down the side in order, out of order, nice and clean and even, wonky, whatever. It’s also an easy way to show them it’s OK to make mistakes, but don’t repeat them.

Highlighters are our life blood in a reading class. We have to find and identify all kinds of things, not to mention differentiate between things. I always want my kids to have two different colors for that reason.

Ticonderoga pencils!!! These are THE best pencils in the world. It is not a lie on their packaging. I hate those wooden or plastic faux wood pencils. They break and the ends become horrible. Or worse, the entire lead inside will be all broken or broken loose and the pencil is useless. This does not happen with Ticonderoga pencils. This is a place to splurge!

I love Crayola’s products, and we use markers a lot to color code things in our notes. I like the non-classic packs because they have more interesting shades and variations of color.

This year I am also going to try to use the Crayola Super Tips in my journal working with notes to also help offset important items in color but without the tip being too large or creating too thick of a line.

Welcome to 6th Grade!

Yes, nearly all of this was mine and my partner’s for the first six weeks of school.

What gets you all riled up for school starting?

Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump

Generally, I don’t go back and re-read a specific book during a slump. But if I did, the book would be either Outlander or Bloody Jack.

Typically my go-to during a REAL slump is a middle grades book because they are light, fun, and about friends and relationships.

If I don’t have a MG on hand, I will go to my back-up: romance.

Favorite Book Blogs/Sites

I feel like I just recently did this topic a few weeks ago, so I’m going to stray a bit…

You guys know I bullet journal. [If not, check out My Bullet Journal series.]

I buy a lot of stencils for my bullet journal. Probably too many. But I like choices and can’t keep anything consistent for the life of me. I have never been able to draw two eyeballs the same size and shape, or keep handwriting in a straight line and consistent in size and strokes. I buy a lot of stencils from a mother-daughter duo a Journal This Now!  They are constantly churning out new designs, which is great. I love that not only do they sell their stencils and make things easy to buy and order, but Janae also shares so many good tips and videos on how to do things. One of my biggest struggles is blending with colored pencils, let alone brush markers or watercolors. I like watching what she does and also mimicking some of her designs because they turn out so great. Mine are not as great, but still. They also have a Facebook page for the business and a Facebook group for users of their stencils to share their work!

I also buy a few stencils throughout the year from Jo at Oops a Daisy. I first found her on Instagram. She is located in the UK, so I don’t buy as many due to the price. I get really stingy about what I’m going to buy.  She shares a lot of ideas on IG.

Books I’d Smash Together

I couldn’t really think of anything for today’s post, so these may seem totally random…because they are!

If only Marina got kidnapped by pirates….or Jackie’s crew. Either way would be fun!

Y’all, The Scarlet Letter was so boring. Let’s liven things up in the world of NIMH!

Both of these books are hilarious in their own rights (really, any Junie B. book), but can you imagine the Herdmans AND Junie B.?!

Which books would you pair up to intertwine?

Top Ten Tuesday: Books with Sensory Reading Memories

Books with Sensory Reading Memories

Today’s topic is about books that are linked to very specific memories for you: where you were, what time of year it was, who you were with, what you were eating, what you were feeling, what you were seeing, etc.

I feel like I’ve talked about most of these several times throughout the last 5 years…

I read these two when I was in 6th grade. I knew they were so taboo for me to read at that age, so I first read them and I’d stay up late at night until I heard my mom come home around midnight or 1 am. A few times I almost got caught! When I’d hear her pull up, I’d shove the book under my mattress, turn out the reading light, and roll over and pretend to be asleep. She never actually caught me, except there was one time I wasn’t fast enough to get the light out and back in bed. I feigned something or other as to why I was still up. Then I’d re-read them in the summer because I didn’t have books because school was out. I’d spend all of the hot Texas summer morning curled up on my bunk bed reading and I was left alone for the most part, which surprises me now in hindsight.

I read Looking for Alaska for a required adolescent literature class. It was a spring semester course. I read the book about six months before my cousin committed suicide. I have inexplicable ties to this book because of that. If I had picked up this book AFTER, I never would have finished it. In the days and weeks after we laid him to rest, I scavenged this book so hard for passages I thought would give me the answers, just like Pudge did in the book to seek out his answers. For the longest time I kept this book on my headboard (it is like a little bookcase with two compartments and the top shelf). I have now put it back on the bookcase.

I fell in love with a little guttersnape named Jacky Faber in high school. My school library had the first two books, if I remember correctly. I discovered them my junior or senior year and re-read them again before graduating, The books in this series were the first books I ever sought out to buy when I went to college. Up until then, I didn’t really have any of my own books (except my baby books boxed up in storage). I’d always checked out books from the library. I was fascinated with the story of Jacky – Bloody Jack – and all of her adventures and scrapes. I still am. 🙂

HARRY POTTER LATEST BOOK COVERS

I didn’t read Harry Potter until I graduated college. I used my new-fangled Kindle Lending Library to read the series. I didn’t know how it worked, so I was pissed when I finished the first book in January 2013 and I couldn’t immediately go on to the next book. It was a long seven months. At this time I was living with my fiance in his crappy apartment with his rude ass roommate who trained dogs and left them to bark all hours of the day and night. I spent most of my time sitting on the floor in front of the couch reading my books and figuring out how all this blog stuff worked.

Which books do you have a sensory memory with?
