My Favorite.. is a weekly meme hosted by Maureen’s Books. In this meme, we share every week something we love with each other. Because let’s face it…The world can be a dark place and it’s time to share something positive.
Oh, there are so many great romance stories. First, I want to tell you a personal one: my parents’ story.
My parents met in a dancehall. Classic for 1980s Texas. My mom was underage and somewhere she should not have been, as were all her friends. In a small town, nobody cares. I guess they didn’t check any IDs to get in the door then.
My dad was out with a cousin and some buddies. He was already graduated and in the service. He spotted my mom and came over to ask her to dance. She turned him down.
He went off. His buddies kept encouraging him to try again. So he did.
And my mom shot him down. Again.
He literally kept coming back every so often, trying again. I guess my dad was determined. Today he would have been harassing her.
My dad tried fifteen times.
My mom’s friends kept telling her to just go dance with the doofus, so my mom finally gave in.
Things went off without a hitch and my parents are still together today. And they are both still just as stubborn. 🙂
My favorite romance story is Lily Christian and Valentine Whitelaw’s story in Wild Bells to the Wild Sky.
Lily Christian was just an enchantingly innocent child of paradise for years after a shipwreck when she fell in love with the sun-bronzed captain who came to take her home to England. But shamed by the resplendent ladies of the court, she bitterly despaired of ever being loved in return.
As the years passed, and fortune’s cruelty forced her into a life of adventure, the girl once forgotten became a ravishing beauty who tormented Valentine Whitelaw’s heart. And as the royal treachery that had destroyed her family now threatened her, he became her champion.
Drawn together into perilous adventure and intrigue, they crossed the world, won glorious renown in the service of the Queen… and found their love’s destiny.
I love all the elements of the entire story beyond simply their romance. But I fell in love with how they fell in love. A young, impressionable girl falling in love with the man who rescued her after years living on an island and caring for her younger siblings. Fast forward years later and she is now a striking woman that the captain falls for. How destined is that?
