Wednesday morning I woke up to a text from The Man that he spent half the night in the hospital – transported while on duty. I got a brief 5 minutes on the phone with him without a whole of information. Even on Friday night, he didn’t want to talk about it. All I know is that when he showed up for this call he was attacked by multiple people – all family members – and had extensive tests run and numerous shots. He had a beautiful array of marks and one of his arms looked swollen even on Friday. After I was able to talk to him, it was unclear if he was going to be discharged or not. I spent the entire day in turmoil. I felt like a kite floating away, detached from reality.

That afternoon our faculty meeting was canceled, so I made an appointment with my chiropractor. My thoracic spine felt like a steel rod anchored in a ball bearing that wasn’t rotating right at my bra strap on my back. Incredible pain anytime I would twist, turn, or bend. While one adjustment doesn’t fix it – and that’s what sucks – it would bring the pain level back down. On the way, I got pulled over by an officer who was quite rude.  He yelled about where I pulled over (where do you pull over on little country roads with lots of curves? there is no public property – keep driving and it’s going to be worse for you) and about how I was trespassing. Despite going with the flow of traffic – and all the cars in front of me – I was the one ticketed. My coworkers asked why I didn’t say anything – anything that came out of my mouth he started yelling over, so I shut up and just waited. I was very uncomfortable, and if the time of day had been different – if I had been pulled over at night – I wouldn’t have felt safe the way I was treated. As it was, I was worried about his conduct and what he would do.

Thursday morning my mom called to check in. My brother sent her a message in the middle of the night asking to come back home. After being so adamant that she was not going to let him come back home, she is.

Saturday I went to Texas Teen Book Festival with two of my favorite coworkers, my partner and my everyday librarian. We saw Jason Reynolds again, who visited our school last month. I also had a friend, Lizzie Velasquez, putting out her book and Marie Lu was one of the keynote speakers talking about her new book Warcross. It seemed more low key than last year, without as big of a turnout. I was disappointed in the last panel I attended, which was THE one I wanted to go to. The moderator sucked and ruined it. I literally didn’t even know what the question was as soon as she finished talking because she just talked and talked and talked in circles and squares and triangles. I don’t think the authors on the panel knew, either, so I got up and walked out. I couldn’t stay.

I finally finished a book since August!! I finished The Master of Strathburn late Tuesday night, and while the ending was the perfect climactic moment of its own, I felt the book was ruined by the very anticlimactic epilogue that wasn’t necessary. I don’t think the author knew how to finish writing out the situation that was put into play in the second to last chapter.

I read NetGalley books in batches, and I started reading the first few pages of the last book in this batch. Then it’s on to new books!

Some games are hotter off the ice…

Sofia Phillips feels cursed. Her father cheated on her mother, her boyfriend cheated on her—she’s done with dating. A summer work-exchange program in Finland is the perfect escape. But instead of gaining experience as an athletic trainer, she’s cleaning toilets. Awesome. The trip is a disaster, and even better, she meets Kyle Bennett. In the sauna. Naked.

Sexy hockey player Kyle was the star right wing for an NHL team. But after an accident killed his wife and left him injured, Kyle has appreciated the “therapeutic” benefits of booze and puck bunnies. Now in Finland for the summer, he’s coaching in an elite hockey-training camp for teens. When Sofia’s grandmother decides to set her up with a nice Finnish man, Sofia recruits Kyle as her make-believe boyfriend. Neither expects their first kiss to sizzle. And neither expects, while stranded on an island during a storm, to have a scorching night of passion.

But as their charade, and then their attraction, develops into something deeper, the past comes back, threatening to destroy them. They must decide if their feelings for each other are strong enough to survive—or it will be game over.

  1. If I had a dollar for everytime someone told me they were done and not taking someone back …. Geez on the officer and oh lord your man..that is scary. Sorry about the pain. Damn, I am exhausted just reading about your week. Hang in there!

    • I know. The Man says our entire family should start a pool and see who can get mega rich off this entire situation. I will be filing a complaint of conduct against the officer. If I could go regularly to see the chiropractor near The Man’s house that I started seeing this summer, I would be absolutely good. Once a week or even every two weeks sometimes. The change in the weather and the school crap lately has increased my environmental and emotional stressors. I would like to trade lives with someone now! Less stress, more sleep.

  2. You’ve had quite a rough week! I’m so sorry to hear about the Man; I hope he’ll be all right. And I’m sorry about your back pain, which sounds excruciating; I hope you get some relief. And about your run-in with the traffic officer. He sounds scary. I can only wish you a much better week this week, healthwise and in every other way!

    • It was rough. I was a basket case all Wednesday, a little less on Thursday. I have decided to buy my own personal electromagnetic shock therapy machine to use at home in the locked down areas of my back to prevent such drastic pain when I can’t go to the chiropractor. Only problem is I need someone to put the pads on my back, so I can’t even do it by myself. I was uncomfortable and agitated by the officer. If it had been any darker, I would have been concerned for myself in the middle of the boonies, pulled over by a screaming man. It was unnecessary and seemed to be indicative of a power trip.

    • I liked the two I’ve had put on over acrylic nails, but I discovered when she put it on my nail that it seemed bulky and not as smooth and clean like on the fake nails. I don’t know if it was her application, but they are very thick! I am liking it so far – and my nails are growing! I’ve always had a problem with that. I’ll go back in about 3 weeks and get a new color. Thank you – I was very scared.

    • Yeah, it was. It started out so good, too! I’m hoping to soak up The Man this weekend. I’m going to stick to him like a spider monkey. He’s going to be so annoyed. That’s what happens when you almost die and then pretend you didn’t.
