Again, another week spent at school until 8:00 or later every day.
A coworker in another grade level whom I don’t know well stopped me one day mid-sentence. I was speaking to someone in my department, and this third lady walked in and sat down to meet with my department peep. She stopped and said, “Do you even have a life?”
She actually said it as a compliment, and went on to list off things I’m doing this year for my campus. When she finished rattling off the list a little out of breath, I chimed in.
“And I travel 1.5 hours out of town every weekend.”
And she just looked at me, silently asking, “Seriously?”
I told her in reality, no, I don’t have a life.
After ruminating on her conversation I came to a decision. I am joining disc jockey Bobby Bones of Kase 101 in doing one human thing each week. So every week I will leave school within an hour of dismissal and go do one human thing with another human.*
*Exceptions: Or with Baby, OR doing something I enjoy by myself.
In house news, it is under contract. The potential buyer contacted me Thursday night to set up a meeting on Saturday. I called him Friday as I was leaving for the man’s. I don’t think he was expecting to be told no. I told him upfront about the issues with the entire thing and that I am kind of wary. He paused for a minute, not knowing what to say to everything, and then just pushed on about setting up a meeting time. We’ll see how that goes this week.

I’ve decided to combine the new addition of “Reading Now” with my “New Arrivals” since I don’t always have new books each week.
I did finish a new book I never even talked about until Wednesday. I thought it was for a tour last Monday and I was freaking out about it only to realize on Wednesday that the tour was for tomorrow. I’ve got my days all mixed up. I’m still slugging through Regarding Anna, which I told myself I would finish by Friday…for about the third week in a row.
I did take a step back and visited Amazon, but look at my variety in new books!
This is a feature I am adding to my Sunday Posts. After being asked by a coworker – in all seriousness – if I had a life, I decided to join disc jockey Bobby Bones of Kase 101 in doing one human thing each week.
How does it work?
In order to not lose what little sanity I have left and in order to not become enslaved to the Texas Education Agency via my school district, I will…
- leave school within an hour of dismissal once a week
- go do one human thing with another human
- talk about my human thing on the blog each week
So what human things did I do this week? They were work-related, but they involved other humans and things I enjoy, so they count!
Tuesday I got to drive my department peeps to a training to see author Jeff Anderson again. He is great at teaching writing workshops – teaching teachers how to teach writing. He is coming out with a second installment in the Zach Delacruz series, coming out in October. I pre-ordered my book! 🙂
On Thursday our secondary campuses librarian scheduled a guest speaker, Jo Ivester, to come talk to our students. I was running around trying to get the best coverage photos I could in a gym with all the overflow kids sitting on the floor and with the volleyball nets still up. I thought that was a tad rude, to be honest. She was also at the high school PAC that night to talk more in-depth. Her platform is her book, On the Outskirts of Hope, which I bought. She tells her story of moving from an all-white community to an all-black community in 1960s Mississippi. I found her stories interesting and wanted to read the book. Since I know the librarian, I got to chat with her about the event and Jo signed my book and spoke with me.
And then on Saturday I stepped out of my comfort zone and went to a new restaurant on my own. As I was getting my it’s-been-over-a-month treatment at the nail salon, I saw something on social media for a burger place. In the actual city where the man lives, there are not a lot of true sit-down restaurants, so when I saw this new place that started as a food truck, I decided to take a chance and go find it for lunch. It was a little hard to find because it was in those really nice houses that don’t even look like businesses, let alone restaurants. The food was OK, there were only six tables, and the interior looked all thrown together. I found out they only opened last Saturday, so they weren’t prepared at all! I was very impressed by the staff, though. My waitress was incredibly sweet and continually checked on all her tables. The owner’s wife was manning the register and took the time to explain and show the elderly man in front of me how to use this new-fangled technology. 
As someone with a mother who is fearful of technology, and doesn’t understand it or how to use it, I appreciated that small act of kindness. I will gladly go back to a place getting off the ground with a little pricier items if they treat their customers with kindness and grace. I see you, Big Rob’s!
I also learned how to make memes! This could either be a potentially amazing thing, or a horrifying nightmare. Here was the first one I made after finishing my hours-long saga of agony to complete the new educator appraisal system for my state. And then days later everyone in my hall was flocking to me super stressed out about how to do this ish.

I love the Do One Human Thing a Week challenge! That sounds awesome. It gets so easy to get caught up in to do lists and goals that’ it’s easy to forget to do something fun or out of the ordinary – especially when work is chaotic as yours is! I love the sound of the restaurant. Service and basic kindness will earn serious brownie points. I’d rather go to a restaurant that I enjoy being in and feel comfortable in than one that might have slightly better food. Good luck with the house mess. I understand the buyer not really processing the issues because it is hard to do when you get your mindset but this whole thing sounds like a disaster. Have a great week!
It is way too easy to get caught up in all the things that can’t get done everyday. I can’t wait to see what this little restaurant does. They did say they were buying the the next door business space and knocking down the wall. Thanks for stopping by!

Oh I always thought it was a bit unconventional for the buyer to meet with the buyer, isn’t that what realtors are for? I love that you are spending more “me’ time now. It was kinda rude for your co-worker, but I guess you needed to hear that. Good for you!
Yeah…I don’t think the realtor is interested in meeting with me after she pissed me off. I think I definitely needed to hear what my coworker said, too.
I love love love the Human connection thing…yes, we all need time to connect or even just do something for ourselves and not the benefit of others..good for you!
I missed something re the house buyer. Are they wanting to find out when you will leave or are they interested in you staying on?
Love the human connection thing. I think of blogging and writing (and reading) as my ‘outside of life’ things but need to do more so am thinking of enrolling in an Italian course! Egad! That’s a big thing for me as I don’t like doing stuff during the week and it’s on a weeknight.
The (potential) buyer is interested in knowing if I’ll stay on and reviewing their new rental terms…even though they don’t own the property yet. I suppose they were the only client to be interested in buying. An Italian course – how fun!
I read a fiction novel last year in which one of the main characters did something similar as what you are going to be doing–doing one human connection thing a week. I didn’t realize it was a real thing. I love the idea though. And it sounds like it’s working well for you so far.

What a great idea — to do one human thing per week! That restaurant sounds like a nice little place. I agree; I’ll pay a little more for kindness and courtesy, and for an owner-operated restaurant. And good for you for making some time for you, away from work. My mom and stepdad have been urging me to find ways to get out of the house more. It’s one of the hazards of working at home; most days, I don’t see anyone but my husband and the cats. I’m an introvert, but even introverts need people (not to mention getting away from work!) I’m going to try to go back to the knitting group I was attending, and also see if Mr. Bookwyrm and I can’t manage a date occasionally. 🙂
I hope everything works out with the house. I thought at first you were selling, but it sounds like you’re renting and the owner is selling? I don’t blame you for being a little cautious about that! I hope it goes well.
