The Question:

How do you decide what books to read? – So Many Books, So Little Time

My Answer:

Honestly, it’s usually a revolving door of review tour books.

But last year I stopped accepting books for review through the blog. I was just so behind (and I still am), and I feel it’s made all the difference. I now have the freedom to snatch up a crime novel, or an illustrated children’s book, or a great steampunk read. I feel better about my reading now, and even though I feel bad because I feel obligated to review the books I received…well, I’ll get to them. Eventually.

Last year after reading Enough Rope by P.L. Doss, I wanted to go on a crime novel reading spree, which I kinda did. What I decided to do was dedicated each month to a specific genre, with guest posts on topics related to that genre and a boatload of reviews within that genre. Unfortunately, I think my best month was September (September Sizzlers) for romance reads. I read a few crimes in October, only one diverse book in November, a bunch of Christmas reads in December, a handful of historical reads in January, a few chicklit books in February, and a TON of children’s and MG books in March and April.

I did not enjoy this as much as I thought I would, nor do I think it was very successful. From now on, it’s whatever catches my eye! And I think I’m going to try mood reading. I know several of y’all out there read based on this methodology, so I think I’m going to give in to it.

How do you decide what to read? Leave a comment with your response and your Friday Follow.

  1. Nice! I am sort of a whimsy reader, but I still have review books. But I do try to limit what I request and accept. But it’s usually books from my release list that I want to read anyway. But then it’s just becomes harrowing when I have so many at once and need to get read in a timely matter. I’m almost caught up though. So I’m looking forward to returning to my TBR Mountain of Doom! LOL!

  2. Dedicating a month to a specific genre sounds like a really great idea, but I understand why it didn’t work out. I pick books that catch my eye too, it’s usually a very spur of the moment thing! Hope you have a great weekend!

  3. Luckily, I haven’t had too much of a problem with getting behind on ARCs and books from authors for review. I just started my blog not that long ago, so I don’t have much of a backlog. I can see having too much that you’re obligated to read would really cut into your enjoyment though! Too much pressure!
